A reference number identifies a watch model, not one individual watch. Rolex packs the model, bezel, and metal into six digits and a few letters (126710BLRO). Patek Philippe uses a four-digit model number followed by bracelet, metal, and dial codes (5711/1A-010). Audemars Piguet combines the root reference, case material, finish, bracelet, and dial into one dotted string (26331ST.OO.1220ST.01). Each brand also engraves its numbers in a different place, which matters when checking a watch.
Is a reference number the same as a serial number?
No. The reference is shared by every watch of a model; the serial belongs to one watch. Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet record a case number and a separate movement number instead. The reference tells you what a watch should be. The unique numbers, checked against the papers, tell you whether this one is.
Where does each brand put the number?

Rolex |
Between the lugs at 12 o'clock |
Serial between the lugs at 6 on older watches, on the rehaut (inner ring under the crystal) on later ones |
A reference that doesn't match the bezel, metal or papers |
|
Patek Philippe |
On the ring around a sapphire caseback, or inside a solid one |
Case number on the case, movement number on the calibre |
A reference engraved between the lugs |
|
Audemars Piguet |
Rarely engraved at all; it lives in AP's registers and on the papers |
Case number on the case, movement number on the movement |
Numbers that disagree with the papers |
The Patek row catches people out. A reference between a Patek's lugs deserves a close look. AP is the outlier: its own archive says the model number rarely appears on the watch.
How do you read a Rolex reference number?
Count the digits. Four digits are early references, five arrived in the mid-1970s, and six have been standard since around 2000. On a six-digit reference, the first four give the model family, the fifth the bezel, and the sixth the metal. Letters describe the bezel color.
|
Position |
Code |
|
Fifth digit (bezel) |
0 smooth or domed, 1 rotating, 3 fluted, 4 gem-set, 6 Turn-O-Graph |
|
Last digit (metal) |
0 Oystersteel, 1 Everose Rolesor, 2 Rolesium, 3 yellow Rolesor, 4 white Rolesor, 5 Everose gold, 6 platinum, 8 yellow gold, 9 white gold |
|
Letters (bezel colour) |
LN black, LV green, LB blue, BLRO blue and red, BLNR blue and black, CHNR brown and black, VTNR green and black |
The letters are French: LN is lunette noire, VTNR is vert-noir, the bezel of the Rolex Sprite. Older references used some digits differently, so read a vintage number against a vintage chart.

The part most guides skip: the configuration code
Six digits don't record the dial or bracelet. Rolex's catalog adds a four-digit suffix: 126710BLRO-0001 is the Pepsi on a Jubilee, -0002 the same reference on an Oyster. They trade differently, so "126710BLRO" alone doesn't tell you which watch you're getting. The Rolex Batman works the same way. On a Jubilee, collectors call the 126710BLNR the Batgirl.
Where the Rolex code breaks

The Daytona 116500LN reads 0 in the bezel position despite its tachymeter scale, and the Sea-Dweller 126600 reads 0 although its bezel rotates. The prefix 1266 alone could be a Submariner Date, a Sea-Dweller or a Yacht-Master.
Letters shift across generations too. On the five-digit 16610, LV is the Kermit, green bezel over a black dial; on the 116610, it is the Hulk, with a green dial as well (see Rolex Hulk and Kermit). One reference can carry two dials: the 116500LN is either the white Panda Daytona or the black reverse Panda.
The reference narrows the watch down; dial and papers finish the job. To date by serial, use the Rolex serial number lookup. Goldbro, an independent Rolex dealer in Las Vegas, lists the full reference on every watch.
How do you read a Patek Philippe reference number?
A modern Patek reference has up to four parts: a four-digit model number, an optional slash code for the bracelet, a material letter, and a three-digit dial code after the hyphen. 5711/1A-010 is the Nautilus (5711) on an integrated bracelet (/1) in steel (A) with the blue dial (-010).

In real listings, 5712/1A-001 is the steel moon-phase Nautilus on a bracelet, while 5712G-001 is white gold on a strap, so it has no slash code. 7340/1R-001 and 7340/1R-010 are the same rose gold Twenty~4 with silvery and olive green dials. The Patek Philippe Nautilus collection repeats these patterns throughout.
What a Patek reference won't tell you
The year. Patek Philippe publishes no serial-to-year table. A modern watch is dated by its Certificate of Origin, an older one by an Extract from the Archives, and the case and movement numbers must match that document. Vintage references such as the 1518 predate the material letter, so the papers settle the metal. Goldbro lists Patek Philippe in Las Vegas with paperwork status shown.
How do you read an Audemars Piguet reference number?
A modern AP reference reads left to right: root reference, case material, finish, bracelet or strap, dial. 26331ST.OO.1220ST.01 is the Royal Oak Chronograph (26331) in steel (ST) with standard finishing (OO), a steel bracelet (1220ST) and a blue dial (01). Change the last two digits to 02 for a black dial; 03 is silver-toned.
Root references have run to five digits since the mid-1980s, when the original Royal Oak 5402 was renamed 25402.

Read the case number instead
On an AP, check the engraved case and movement numbers. From around 1975, the case number carried a letter prefix (B, C, D, and onward) that gives a rough production window. Since 2017, the numbers are random and carry no date. Early Royal Oaks also wear a small sequence number, such as "A 26" on a 1972 5402ST, which is not a reference.
Beyond a rough era, AP's Extract of the Archives is the definitive record. The Audemars Piguet serial number lookup shows where each number sits, and current Royal Oak stock, like all Audemars Piguet in Las Vegas at Goldbro, carries the dotted reference in full.

What to check before buying
-
Decode the listing's reference and write down what the watch should be.
-
Hold that against the photos. A BLRO with an all-black bezel is not a BLRO.
-
Ask for a photo of the engraving at the lugs or caseback.
-
Check the unique numbers against the papers.
-
If anything disagrees, stop and have the watch authenticated in hand.
Goldbro runs that check in-house before listing any watch, and eligible pieces carry a 12-month Goldbro warranty. If the exact configuration isn't in stock, Goldbro's luxury watch sourcing service starts from the reference number.
A matching reference and a genuine watch are separate questions, since numbers can be copied. For brand-level checks, the Rolex FAQs cover the rehaut engraving, the Cyclops and faked papers, the Audemars Piguet FAQs cover tapisserie depth and screw alignment, the Patek Philippe FAQs go reference by reference through the Nautilus, and the Omega FAQs cover Speedmaster and Seamaster details.
Frequently asked questions
1. Does Patek Philippe engrave the reference between the lugs?
No. Patek Philippe engraves it on or inside the caseback. On a Patek, a reference between the lugs is a reason to have the watch authenticated.
2. What does ST.OO mean on an Audemars Piguet?
A stainless steel case (ST) with AP's standard finishing (OO), as on 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01, the blue-dial Jumbo.
Goldbro Timepieces was founded in 1895 as Golbro. If a number and a watch don't match, call 702-964-5855 or arrange a private viewing by appointment in Las Vegas.
3. What does LN mean on a Rolex?
Lunette noire, French for black bezel, as on the Submariner Date 126610LN. LV is green, LB blue.
4. Can a reference number tell you what year a watch was made?
Only a rough era. A pre-2010 Rolex is dated by its serial, a Patek Philippe by its Certificate of Origin or Extract, and an AP by its case number and papers.
5. Can two watches with the same reference look different?
Yes. A 126710BLRO comes on a Jubilee or an Oyster, and a 116500LN with a white or black dial.
